How meditation can give you your New Year's resolution
We often think meditation is hocus pocus or that it's too hard or that it's for the spiritually weird or that it couldn't possibly be helpful to our "real" lives. I used to think the same things. But then I started being curious about meditation from a professional and personal experience, read: I had shit to work out. I quickly realized that with anything worth doing and for the benefits to show up we need to practice and put the time in. We have to put our fears aside and dive in. Most of us don't give meditation a chance to soak in. I can tell you that through the work I put into meditation that it can help us live and feel better and, more importantly, be happier people. And help us with our New Year's resolutions.Case in point: I went to a meditation workshop a couple of weeks ago as a student, a rare thing recently that I am working to change. We were asked to meditate on what word would represent our 2015. The job: Lay in a comfortable position with your eyes closed while you focus on your breathing. All in all not hard. And wait. And wait. Drums played in the background. People in the room snored. Concentration was tested. And then like a flash BAM!, my word came to me. Heal. Funny how our subconscious is tripy. I never would in a million years or with conscience contemplation would I have chosen that word. My ego probably would have convinced of a word like 'strong' or 'confident' or 'badass'. But nope, my subconsicous chose heal. So instead of fighting it I trusted the meditation and went along with it like riding a wave. Here's why I think my word rocks and is ultimately perfect:
- My subconsicous mind is fucking brilliant. I've had a hell of a year and yes, I need to heal myself from many things.
- It makes me sound vulnerable which we all are.
- The career I have chosen lets me help others heal their own stuff too. The word is as much about healing me as it is about healing others.
So there. New Year's resolution solved. I guess excessive drinking, negative self-talk, or putting other people first is out for 2015, for you and me. Give it a go. What word represents your 2015?
