Yoga Therapy Tip: R&R Like a Boss
In today's 'Yoga Therapy Tip' I share one of my favoutite prop setups in yoga. The main lesson when it comes to yoga props is you don't need to spend a lot of money on expensive swanky versions to reap the rewards. You can use everyday items you already have at home as props. This particular setup takes three firm blankets ideally of the same size. Indian or Mexican blankets are good examples of what you could use. I recommend travelling to the country of origin to get the real thing. If you do take me with you, but I digress. Use this set-up to relax, open and stretch the chest, shoulders, and back, and as support for meditation. Trust me, this prop ensemble is decadent. Roll onto the support and lay on your back so your spine is along the long blanket; the back of your head to your pelvis should be supported. The second blanket stacked on top of the first is for under your head and neck, the third blanket stacked across the centre is for the middle of your back. The space between the two is for the backs of your shoulders and upper back. As as you lay on the support, reach your arms out to the sides in a "T" position with the palms up. Bend your knees and place the feet on the floor if your low back is unhappy, otherwise stretch the legs out along the floor. Close your eyes, focus on your breath, and ask for peace and calm. Visualize a bright white light shinning out from the centre of your chest as you inhale and see it dim as you exhale. Stay here as long as you'd like sans pain. Enjoy the blissful rest; if you fall asleep, bonus.
